School Story:

I always remember Mrs. Kammerdiener (sp?) and found her to be encouraging to me in many ways. She was so intelligent she was a little flakey, but in a good way if you understood her humor! I especially remember her calling WAHS... WHAT? High School.

I also learned a lot on debate/drama trips all over Texas with Mr. Draper. I saw life in a different light on those excursions and we always had a blast (seems like we spent a week in Sonora with the one act play contest and tournament.

Mr. O'Rear taught me all the chemistry I could stand and helped me realize the arts were my calling more than the sciences. Ms. Glossbrenner challenged me and everybody and cut no slack when we tried to be slackers. I may not have always agreed politically with her but I always appreciated her dedication to the community and her students. She and Mr. O'Rear (never dare to call him Larry!) helped identify my being organizationally challenged. They cut no slack on projects, homework, & notebooks.

I can admit that before my Junior year, as I enrolled, I met Mrs. Luigi. She helped me develop a love for music that has been a source of pleasure and strength my entire life. Years after High School, I ran into her at the Walnut Bowl Factory between Buda and Kyle on IH 35. At the time, I was drifting through life as a professional college student and she reminded me of things that mattered at 16. I understand she died with cancer several years ago, but she was a true friend at two critical times in my life. My funniest memory is having her take several of us in the choir to the auditorium and lifting us up off the ground with licks from a paddle she borrowed from Deputy Dog, oops, Mr. Morris. She brought tears to our eyes but we wouldn't let her see from embarrassment. Thinking of Mr. Morris reminds me of Mrs. Morris and they were a team throughout life. We may have made fun of him and her but they both tried to help a lot of kids who never realized their dedication.

Sadly, I also remember the many who have passed on since those days. Most of them prematurely (accidents, alcohol, & drugs). I have really been blessed. I'm financially poor, but rich in life in so many wonderful ways. Blessings to all!

Did not realize Edna Monica has passed away.  She & Lance were good friends & I didn't know about him til recently & her today.  My transition from WAHS to adult life was tumultuous & they & their Mother were good friends. I had not forgotten & only wish I'd kept in touch. Living keeps us busy but good memories bless our hearts. God is good!

Just thought about running into you at Sears (?) on the San Marcos square. Always enjoyed talking with you & pray you are well. Finally got life together somewhat & am enjoying two small grandsons River & Silas. Retired, I sing at nursing homes & look after my 94 year old Dad. Hope life has been good for you, I really enjoyed that visit in San Marcos. May God bless you in every way, Don

Remember 1968 & a trip from Alice to Nashville to Kentucky? A real learning experience with Southwestern Book Co. I feel happy, I feel great, I feel terrific! Looks like you’ve had a good life & survived well! May God bless you & your family!

Really enjoying being a GramPa! My two grandsons, River & Silas, are such a joy to behold. Hard to believe at one time I didn’t think I’d ever marry, have kids, or grandkids. This weekend also brought up memories of football at Memorial Stadium & the fighting Alice Coyotes! My brother & I talk on the phone often & remember life in the 1960’s in Alice. I am thankful & grateful for the many good memories we share but also that our father still is with us. He’ll be 94 in October & it is a privilege to wander to Lufkin & shop for him at WalMart regularly. The two hour drive there & two hours back is a great time to thank God for every day I get. I’m still singing at nursing homes regularly & the years at First Baptist in the choir Sunday morning trained me well. Somehow, now I feel pretty close to living in a nursing home myself. The old hymns I sing remind me of simple faith & the grace of God. He has blessed me so much & sharing “It is Well With My Soul” or “I’ll Fly Away” comes straight from my heart. More than singing “The Hills of Home” at the graduation of WAHS class of 1968. I dreamed of being an opera star then & never came close. Later, I thought I’d write great songs like Willie or Robert Earl Keen. Wrote quite a few that I’ve forgotten but I never lost the joy of music. God has blessed me to be able to strum my guitar & sing all these years! Guess I’ll keep on pickin & grinnin! May God bless you!
