After he graduated he continued his work at Baptist Memorial Hospital and Methodist Hospital in San Antonio, Texas. In 1975 he followed his roots back home where he became the Chief X-ray Technician at P&S Hospital in Alice, Texas. After several years at P&S Hospital Ruben decided to pursue his dream of becoming a doctor. He then began his coursework at La Universidad Autonoma de Tamaulipas where he received his doctorate degree in medicine. This accomplishment meant the sacrifice of time from his wife and two sons but it was an accomplishment that was well respected by his family and peers. In 1983, before he graduated from medical school, he and his wife started Regional Home Health Agency. While he was doing his residency at P&S Hospital Doc decided that his true calling was not only in medicine but in business. In 1996 he expanded into the funeral industry. He built Ruben M. Garcia & Sons Funeral Home where his two sons Reuben Todd and Jason work as the funeral directors. Doc was a big fan of the sport of boxing. His love of the sport drew him towards the desire to become a boxing judge. Doc had dreams and there was nothing that could get in the way of that. It was January 25, 1991 when Doc judged his first fight in Corpus Christi, Texas and October 26, 2013 when he judged his last fight in San Jose, Costa Rica. He was a member of the International Boxing Federation, the World Boxing Organization and the World Boxing Association. Doc traveled judging fights and meeting fighters and promoters from all over the world.
