IN THE CARE OF

Forest Park East Funeral Home & Cemetery

Thomas M. Root passed away Monday July 13th due to complications from battling covid-19. Thomas, or Tom to those who knew him well, was born in Niagara Falls, NY on June 22, 1948 to Donald and Kathryn Vincent Root.

At an early age, Tom moved to Texas with is family and spent his formative years growing up in the Victoria area.

Tom lived an amazing life. He was a pilot for the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, he was a Military Intelligence officer, and he even taught High School and college courses, but most of his professional career was spent as an attorney. Tom was passionate about his clients and gave his full attention to each one. His enormous heart often led him to set his pricing based on the means of the individual instead of the going market rate. He practiced law all across Texas from the Beaumont/Port-Arthur area in the east to El Paso in the west. He finally settled in the Clear Lake area and practiced law there for the past 20 years.

He was an alumnus of the University of Houston (Go Coogs) and St. Mary’s University School of Law.

In his off-time, Tom enjoyed wood-working, fishing, watching movies with his family, and perfecting the art of the sarcastic zinger. He was also hoping to retire soon and spend time traveling in his new motor-home.

Tom was a fan of the finer things in life and enjoyed pipes, fine cigars, and sipping expensive alcohol even though he wasn’t supposed to partake of any of that. He enjoyed good coffee and amassed a huge collection of coffee machines in his pursuit of the perfect brew. He loved music and was a fine singer. He’d tell you so himself.

Tom was a family man and, though he was part of a blended family, adamantly insisted that he didn’t have step children. All of them were just his children...each of them just as precious to him as the others.

He is preceded in death by his parents, as well as his sister Phyllis Walker and her husband, Jerry.

He is survived by a host of people who loved him including his wife of 25 years, Sandy Root; his children Shawn Root and his wife, Alicia; Errin Cox and her husband, Richard; Misty Schion; Kelly Borne and her husband, Chad; Stephanie Allison and her husband, Chris; and Clint Stapleton; grandchildren Daniel, Julianna, and Catherine Root; Zoie, Camden, and Merrick Monroe; Drake Cox; Madison, Macie, and Mason Schion; Kaitlin and Kristina Borne; Justin Stapleton; great-grandchildren Atlas Root, Krew Miller, and Maggie Mortera. He is also survived by his siblings Patricia Morgan and her husband, James; Sheila House; and Timothy Root and his wife, Doris.

Tom was a fan of the color blue and would have loved bright colors to be worn while celebrating his life.
